Listening: sounds, words, understanding
When first hearing a new language, the mind cannot hear words.  The sounds are a buzz.  The ear needs time to get used to and hear the different sounds. 

Most learners take a long time to be able to tune into a new language.  Daniel Tammet is an exception.  His language learning is at the end of a video that is well worth watching.
