Claire Özel is Disability Support Coordinator at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara.
During the 12 years she taught English, she was involved in developing ways to improve the inclusion of students with a range of disabilities in foreign language learning. From 2002 she began to follow the progress of disabled students in their university departments, thus developing concepts of disability support within Turkish institutions of higher education. In January 2007, Claire led an EU project (Leonardo da Vinci), University Disability Suppor Systems: 'Turkey-Britain' in which representatives from 5 universities and a ministry visited the University of the West of England (Britain), returning to Turkey with material to set up an inter-university network for Disability Support Coordinators. Claire is the moderator of the e-group linking representatives from 30 universities (15.5.2008) Claire has taught a course on 'Working with disabled learners' at the Educational Sciences Department, METU, in which disabled people interacted with students to develop better understandings of how social perception, assumptions and actions create disabling situations, and how awareness (of both disabled and non-disabled people) can lead to solutions In her spare time, she is involved in an ecological project near Ankara, and when possible shares the challenges of origami, most recently with children at a school for the blind and their families. Her love of travel is now enriched by projects, as visits become more purposeful. She speaks English, French, Turkish, and bits of other languages...
