Maximize Us - Maximizing Active Participation of Disabled Students during the University Experience was an EU Youth project, 2-10 February 2008 in Ankara.  The project brought together disabled university students and graduates from 8 countries.

Participants came with a wide range of English: one was doing a Master's in English translation, others nervously said 'I no English'.  Two only knew Lithuanian Sign Language, and one deaf participant knew no Sign but could read and write in English.

Some participants were not worried about making mistakes and could happily use 'little English' and give their message.  Others were not sure in the first days, feeling limited by their lack of English; but by the 3rd day people were more confident: when the project is 8 days long, there is no time to learn English,  you just have time to talk in any way with your new friends: one week to share ideas and thoughts.

Everyone found different ways to communicate, and these ways changed over the week.  Some started in silence; when others talked about their feelings in the daily feedback groups) they said 'Ah, me too!'.  Several volunteers took turns to write notes for deaf participants: .  verything was written in 'English': rapid notes (written by non-native speakers) with key words that gave understanding.

Believe that people can find ways to communicate, and they will :)
