| Making materials more accessible |
|
There are many materials available, but how many are suitable for learners with specific needs? By understanding why a learner cannot access material, we will gradually suggest ways in which available materials can be made more accessible. Producing the text in an alternative format may not be sufficient: the learner may need to be introduced to material that may be obvious to other learners. Another purpose of this project is to provide information for teachers so that they can be better prepared, and therefore less fearful of working with disabled learners. When a teacher believes a student can learn, they empower the student. A teacher who does not feel confident that they can teach subconsciously gives signals that can be detected, especially by people who are used to being excluded and seen as 'not able'. For some people, this lack of trust can be a challenge to rise to, "I'll show that I can ..."; but for others people, it can be another discouragement. So another opportunity is lost.
